2-July-2007:
The following is a good description on W0RLI from David, KA7IJK.
"Hank
W0RLI
has basically rewritten his BBS software and incorporated it into SNOS (Simple Network Operation System). The last BETA version update
was in June 2006. Stable release version 1.3 was completed
earlier in 2006. The BETA release is also very stable. To
give you an idea of what is meant by stable, one of the earlier BETA
releases ran continuously for 558 days without a single disruption and
would have run even longer had the power system serving the host
machine not failed.
"W0RLI
blended the BBS, NET/ROM, AX.25 and IP functions into this package.
Simply defined, it is a standalone network router and mail server for
packet radio.
"SNOS
is installed on a basic PC loaded with DOS (MS-DOS 6.22 to 7.10 or
equivalent generic). The SYSOP can connect to the SNOS PC via Ethernet
and TCP/IP with any other compatible PC or router using standard
networking practices.
"SNOS
supports SMTP, HTTP, Telnet and FTP functions. From my client PC
using any standard email client software (i.e. Outlook,
Thunderbird/Icedove, Eudora, etc.) I can generate and send email with
attachments to another SNOS mail server via radio. Files can be FTP'd
from my PC to another SNOS server location using any standard FTP
program. Local server management can be done via HTTP and Telnet in
addition to the local console interface, and remote servers can be
managed via HTTP and or Telnet over the air.
"There
is a loyal following of users in the Portland, Oregon region and
elsewhere across the country. W0RLI developed the software with
the primary objective of being able to provide TCP/IP network
functionality on a radio network that is transparent to the end users.
"I
would suggest that you take some time to look at and try W0RLI's SNOS
software. You can find it at http://home.comcast.net/~w0rli/."
