BBS and PBBS Information

MSYS BBS

updated:  December 30, 2009

General Information:

MSYS is full-service store-and-forward BBS software, with later  versions including a DX Server.  There aren't many details out there on this BBS.  MSYS was written by Mike Pechura, WA8BXN, and is copyright 1994 (per the manual) by HUB COMPUTERS, INC.

User Settings:

Outpost users on MSYS BBSs must be registered and set up as EXPERTS.  The 2 commands you should issue are: "X" and "X 0" where "0" is the number zero.  See the MSYS User Manual for more information on other MSYS BBS commands.

Expert and Paging Commands

You must set yourself up as an EXPERT user on the BBS before using Outpost with MSYS. Manually log on to the BBS, and enter the command here.

  1. Xpert --  This sets and resets your expert status. As an expert, you get a short command prompt and do not receive the message of the day.
    Set Xpert to EXPERT.

You also must turn Paging off. This "feature" was originally built into many BBSs to accommodate a time when we used dumb terminals that didn't have much display memory and we didn't want messages to fly by w/o seeing the text. Manually log on to the BBS, and enter the command here.

  1. X x -- Paging Control, where "x" is a number, sets the number of lines you receive before the BBS stops and asks you if you want "More?". When you set this to zero, there is no pausing when the BBS sends the message.
Set "X 0" for no paging.

The balance of these commands are for information only.

  1. XC -- Toggles the listing of categories when connecting to the BBS while in non-eXpert mode. In eXpert mode you never get the automatic category listing.

  2. XF -- Sets the BBS to send you multiple lines. Use this with a good route.

  3. XR -- Toggles the automatic question asking if you want a reply to the message you just read. This can be useful if you get a lot of personal mail.

  4. XS -- Sets the PBBS to send you one line at a time. Use this with a poor route.

Outpost Notes:

IMPLEMENTATION
SID = [MSYS-1.20beta4-BFXM HI$]
Outpost looks for the "[MSYS" phrase of the SID as the means for identifying this BBS.

CONFIRMATION
Outpost has been confirmed operational with the MSYS user community.

CONSIDERATIONS
The MSYS BBS Prompt is  fixed to the character ">".  This is not a problem PROVIDED messages are not originated with an embedded ">".

Examples where this has been the case are with forwarded emails copied and pasted into packet (with the > preceding each forwarded line), or National Weather Service announcements that have  ">" as part of the general text.

Care should be taken when sending and retrieving messages to ensure data is not inadvertently lost.

BBS Notes:

SPECIAL CONFIGURATIONS, SETTINGS

It has been a while since I have sent this e-mail reminder, but please make it a point to check into the WI ARES/RACES net Sunday night at 6:00 p.m. on 3977.5.y It is important we continue to exercise our equipment and the net. I will be wrapping up a public service exercise this Sunday, but should be able to check in for the first part of the net.y I look forward to hearing you there!
