BBS and PBBS Information

MFJ-1270, MFJ-1274, MFJ-1278 PBBS

General Information:

28-Dec-09: The MFJ-1274 was identified as another variation of PBBS, and is now supported by Outpost.

27-Mar-07: The 1270a/ b/c and MFJ-1278b products have been discontinued.  While MFJ doesn't appear to be in the TNC business anymore (per a cursory search of their catalog), there appears to be plenty of them still out there and in use.

See the MFJ links below for specifications and information on these TNCs.

Outpost Notes::

IMPLEMENTATION
SID = [MFJ-2.0-M$]
SID = [MFJ-2.1-HM$]
SID = [MFJ-2.1a-IH$]
SID = [MFJ-2.1b-IH$]
SID = [MFJ-2.1c-IH$]
Outpost looks for the "[MFJ-2.0" or "[MFJ-2.1" phrases of the SID to identify 5 of the 6 MFJ TNC versions.  For the 6th version that does not produce a SID listing, Outpost will look for the string "Mailbox (B,H(".

Most of the MFJ PBBS Prompt are different; prompts will be determined automatically at connect time.

CONFIRMATION
Assumed operational as of the v2.2 release.  No reported problems with these PBBSs.

CONSIDERATIONS
1.  MFJ-127X PBBS do not cleanly differentiate between private and bulletin messages.  When sending a message with the SB command (SB), the message status flag is set to BN (Bulletin, New(?)).  However, the L, LM, LB, L> xxx, and LT list commands all do the same thing... list everything.  Care should be taken when using the MFJ PBBS as a common mail drop in a multi-user environment with Outpost.

BBS Notes:

SPECIAL CONFIGURATIONS, SETTINGS

Accessing the MFJ PBBs can be done either over the radio port or when directly connected to a PC.  For Connecting:

  • If the PBBS is connected directly to a PC, set Outpost's connect command to "sysop".

  • For connections by the radio port, set Outpost's connect command to the standard TNC "connect" or "c".

 For Disconnecting:

  • If the PBBS is connected directly to a PC, set Outpost's disconnect command to "cntl-c" (spell it out as shown).

  • For connections by the radio port, set Outpost's disconnect command to the standard TNC "bye" or "b".

The MFJ TNCs do not present a standard message list format.  Instead, there are different variations of the listing that show up with variations around the following 3 areas:

1. listings with and with-out @BBS

2. listings with and with-out date/times

3. listings with and with-out the Msg # and Status being a single appended field (last 4 examples below).
