Outpost Packet Message Manager, v2.8.0c042, 28 September 2013 Copyright (c) 2003 - 2013 Jim Oberhofer KN6PE 1. Overview 2. Who should install v2.8.0 3. Installation Notes 4. Changes with this release ---------------------------------- 1. OVERVIEW ---------------------------------- The v2.8 is a focused release primarily designed to deliver two specific changes to Outpost: 1. Replacement Comm Library in Outpost.exe and Ipserial.exe. This change resolves several USB-to-Serial access problems currently experienced with the standard MSCOMM32 driver. This replacement driver also supports Comm Ports up to COM99, and enables Outpost to run on Linux under Wine with serial port access, both hardware ports and USB-to-Serial Ports. Refer to the Outpost-on-Linux application note for information on configuring USB-to-Serial under Linux and Wine. 2. Improved Ipserial Error Handling. There are several errors that occur including Runtime 380. This release resolves it. With the Comm Library change as the primary focus, a limited number of additional defect fixes and some requested enhancements are included. The release updates Outpost.exe and Ipserial.exe only, and is backwards compatible with Outpost v2.7. ---------------------------------- 2. WHO SHOULD INSTALL Outpost v2.8 ---------------------------------- If you have had problems with USB-to-Serial Adaptors, this release should help. Additionally, a USB-to-Serial Adaptor resource page will be created with the findings from a variety of studies, lists of adaptors that work and didn't work, and other information of interest. This release adds also new features and minor enhancements that you may be of interest as well as resolves some problems found since the initial v2.7 release. **If you are a PacFORMS user, you should also install the latest Public version of PacFORMS. ---------------------------------- 3. INSTALLATION NOTES ---------------------------------- This document includes instructions for installing Outpost off of the web, or downloading and running the install program locally, as well as support for building install floppies. NEW USER / FIRST-TIME INSTALLATION ---------------------------------- If you never installed Outpost before, proceed as follows: 1. Download the opsetup280ixx.exe program from the Outpost website. "xx" is the latest release of this installation file. 2. Run the install program and, when prompted, select "First time installation for new users". All Options should be checked. This is a full install that includes all program files, documentation, sample scripts, sample reports, and sample configuration files. 3. When done, run Outpost. Check out the HOW-TO pages on the Outpost website or the users guide that will be loaded into your Docs data directory (From Outpost, Actions > View Outpost data directories). 4. YOU ARE DONE! Enjoy Outpost! EXISTING USER / UPDATE INSTALLATION ------------------------------------ !!! READ ALL INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS PRIOR TO STARTING THIS PROCESS. If you are still on Outpost v2.6 or earlier, STOP... run the Outpost v2.7 installer first to correctly move your data files to new directories. 1. Ensure Outpost is not running. 2. Download the opsetup280ixx.exe program from the Outpost website. "xx" is the latest release of this installation file. 3. Run the install program and select "Update for existing users." This install option is for existing users with configurations that they want to preserve. Only the program files and documentation are installed. You may optionally choose to install the sample files (scripts, reports) if not previously downloaded. WARNING!!! DO NOT SELECT the Sample Configuration Files option if you are a current Outpost user... this will overwrite your existing TNC and BBS configuration files (TncInfo.dat and BbsInfo.dat). You will get a pop-up warning if this is attempted. 4. When done, Run Outpost as usual. 5. The installation process is complete. ----------------------------- 4a.
